There is no single best barista course in Malaysia — the right one depends on your goal. To try coffee, take a 3-hour or 1-day workshop. To learn core espresso, milk and café-workflow skills in a short time, take an intensive beginner course of a few days. For an international specialty-coffee certificate, take an SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) course. For a Malaysian vocational qualification, take SKM Barista. For a longer full-time programme, take a diploma. JWC Academy runs each of these types, at different locations per course (Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, Kajang, and Mount Austin in Johor Bahru); other Malaysian providers are listed below.
Which type of barista course fits your goal?
SCA vs SKM vs City & Guilds: which certificate?
| SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) | International specialty-coffee certificate. Modules include Barista Skills, Brewing, Sensory Skills and Roasting at Foundation, Intermediate and Professional level; the certificate is issued after passing the SCA assessment. |
|---|---|
| SKM Barista (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia) | Malaysian skills certificate under JPK, issued by JPK after the candidate is assessed as competent through an approved certification pathway. Check the centre's current accreditation and programme status with JPK before enrolling. |
| City & Guilds Certificate in Barista Skills | UK-awarded barista certificate offered by some Malaysian colleges. |
| Certificate of completion | Issued by the training provider under its own completion or assessment requirements. It is different from an externally awarded industry or government qualification. |
