How to Become a Barista in Malaysia — The 2026 Career Guide
From your first espresso to a full-time café career. A step-by-step pathway by JWC Academy — Malaysia’s most-awarded coffee school since 2009.
To become a barista in Malaysia, you complete hands-on barista training, earn a recognised certification (SCA or a NEIVCE national diploma), and build real café experience. At JWC Academy, learners progress from a 1-day taster to weekend courses, then to a full diploma or a 9-month Work & Study programme with job placement.
The 4 career pathways at JWC Academy
Different goals need different routes. Here’s how to choose, whether you’re exploring a hobby or committing to a profession.
| Your goal | Recommended path | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Try it first | 1-Day Coffee Experience (RM199) | 1 day |
| Hobby / working adult | Weekend Barista Course (SCA optional) | 2 months |
| Career barista | BMART Diploma (NEIVCE national diploma) | 12 months |
| Career + earn while learning | Work & Study Programme (with placement) | 9 months |
What qualifications do you need?
No prior experience is required to start. Most professional baristas in Malaysia hold either an SCA Coffee Skills certification (international standard) or a NEIVCE national diploma for full-time career roles. No. JWC Academy courses start from complete beginner level. Our 1-day experience and weekend courses are designed for people with zero coffee background.
How long does it take to become a professional barista?
A weekend course (2 months) gives you working skills. For a full career qualification, the BMART diploma is 12 months, and the Work & Study programme is 9 months with job placement.
Is SCA certification worth it in Malaysia?
Yes — SCA Coffee Skills is the international industry standard and is recognised by specialty cafés. JWC Academy offers SCA certification as an optional add-on to coffee courses.
