Picking a Mixology or Coffee School in KL? Ask These 7 Questions

Course selection isn’t about advertising. It’s about what you actually receive after paying. Here are seven questions every prospective KL student should ask.
Who actually teaches the class?
Many schools advertise master instructors then quietly assign assistants. Ask: Does the lead instructor teach the entire course, or just the opening session? Will they personally correct my technique?
How many students per class?
Good answer: 6–10 per group. Classes of 15+ cut your hands-on time in half. If hands-on practice is what you’re paying for, that matters.
What’s the hands-on vs theory ratio?
Target: 70% practice / 30% theory. Watching PowerPoint all day and going home unable to do anything = bad course.
What equipment do you train on?
Ask to see the bar or espresso machine before enrolling. Commercial vs home equipment is a huge gap. Training on a Rancilio Silvia and then walking into a café running a 3-group La Marzocco is a different planet.
Can I practise after class?
Repetition matters more than initial talent. Ask: is the practice space open to enrolled students, and at what extra cost (if any)?
What happens after I graduate?
Top schools refer graduates to partner bars / cafes. Ask: Do you have industry partners that hire your alumni? Can I see a list?
Where is the campus actually located?
Location convenience matters over a 9-month commitment. JWC operates from Bukit Jalil (The Earth) in KL, with direct LRT access and on-site parking — plus additional campuses in Kajang (Selangor) and Mount Austin (Johor Bahru). Consider commute time, parking availability, and public transport access before enrolling.
Bonus question: Can I sit in on one class as a trial? A confident school welcomes trial visits — it’s a good signal of teaching quality and transparency.
The summary
These seven questions cost nothing to ask. The answers will tell you more about a school than hours of scrolling through Instagram. A few minutes of due diligence can save you from an expensive misstep.
